Never ending winter

This never ending winter just doesn't want to end!?!? lol ..Wednesday we were hit with a sloppy snow storm which dumped 4-6 inch of snow depending where you live from Toronto to Barrie, and cooler then normal temps for the next few days, so I didn't run today as I don't like cold or getting my feet wet from the slush. lol.

I'll be back in the pool tomorrow ( Friday ) then if the weather is nice ( as in above freezing, suppose to be sunny tomorrow ) I will do a a run to continue with my Ultra 50 plan to make up for today's run. ;)

Started my 50 mile Ultra training

I kicked off my 50 mile ultra training with going to a nice ST Patty's day party friday where I was able to talk with Catherine about our run route. We decided to go with the out and back to Wasaga beach as it would be more challenging.

Oh and the party was fun to

Joanne and I at the party...

Sunday I went for my first test run, only did 1.5km to check my leg fitness in a tempo run, my first run in over a month! ...OK maybe two months!! lol but I made it with no problems. :)

Today I went for a little longer run of 4 and change K's, I know it's not far but this route is mostly up hill with a nice steap long hill in the middle and my plan is to build my run slow and steady up to and including May 7Th 50 miler,

Below is the map of my run today.....

Tomorrow back in the pool. :)

Tentative map routes for my 50 mile Ultra

I have a couple of tentative map routes for my 50 mile Barrie to Wasaga beach Ultra race. The first map is a out and back where we will have some support through the day to replenish our nutrition and liquids along the route/course via sag wagon, as we won't have aid stations per say, where our support will meet us at some checkpoints throughout the course.

The second map is a shorter loop course that I set up and will present to Catherine as a alternative to an out and back. The second route is a 10 mile route which loops around starting from my house and back across the end of my street, where we would do 5 loops for the 50 miler. The idea is it will be easier for everyone for support where we can be met at the 10 mile mark ( which is at the end of my street from my house )by our support crew rather then them driving all around to meet us at check points in the out and back route all the way to Wasaga beach and back.

I will discuss and finalized which route we use with Catherine Friday night at a ST Patty's party at a friends house that we will be meeting at. :)

This is the out and back course......

This is the 10 mile loop course....

Ironman Arizona November 2010 slide show

I finally made time to add my pictures from Ironman Arizona 2010 in a slide show.

I tried to list them in order, but when I uploaded my pictures somehow they ended up out of order of my trip?

I also posted a copy of my slide show link to the side of my blog as a permanent link.

Barrie to Wasaga beach 50 mile Ultra

.....Is a go! No this is not the Charity Event I've been talking about that I need $1000.00 for? This is just another one of my adventures of challenging myself to see how I can do in running a 50 mile race without all the hoopla of entering an ultra race, paying a fee to get a t-shirt and a finishers medal?

I've been talking about doing this for myself for over a year, to run my bike route to Wasaga beach and back which is exactly 50 miles from my house and back.

This is not the official map of the run route, as it follows some major hwys which is of one of my bike routes, The official run route will be slightly different along back roads avoiding the major hwys that I will map out at a later date. ...

So I started taking with Catherine Harding who has a goal for doing a 100 mile run this summer in Vermont. http://www.vermont100.com/

I got to thinking maybe this will work for the both of us? I want to do a 50 miler without entering a race, just for my own self satisfaction of knowing I can do the distance and Catherine who is training for the 1oo miler needs someone to to do some long training with. So i suggested to her if she wanted I want to do a 50 and we could do it together as part of her training for her hundred. As a result, her training plan has her doing a 50 miler in the middle of May which is perfect timing for me as I get myself ready for another tri season, but want to do this ultra distance. Mind you, this 50 mile run is a training run for Catherine which I will be pacing with, so our goal is to only do the distance, We are not concerned with time, and I'm not a fast runner so hopefully I will be able to keep up with her? lol

I'm hoping to get a few more people on board to run with us either all the way or in sections as well as some volunteers for support passing some food or drink to us along our route as our route will be a out and back, not a standard 50 miler race which is usually a shorter 10 or so km loop where you can pass by a transition point to get nutrition and fluids.

As it stands Adam Bunz Said he will be joining us as a third runner. yay for Adam!

I'll keep you posted on the official date of our Barrie to
wasaga beach 50 mile Ultra run and my training progress as I start my training for my first 50 mile single day run.

Ps. and again this is not, I repeat NOT! my big plan for my charity event that I need $1000.00 for? My charity event will be much bigger! so if you want to donate or sponsor me for it I'll let you know what it is so I can do it later this summer.

No money, no go for my charity event.

So I waited to hear from the foundation about winning the $1000.00 so I can do my event Well I wasn't one of the short Lister's and didn't win, but apparently they keep all entrees and could award the money next month or the month after and so on. Anyway I won't keep my hopes up and will have to either find the money I need to enter my event or just put off my event until next year and hopefully with more time and saving I can come up with the money......

So you want to know what my charity event is?.... well I'll tell you if you have $1000.00 and want to sponsor me. :)

For now it's just a dream, and with that I will just continue on with my "less is more" training.

My pitch for $1000.00 to secure my Athletic/charity event this summer.

I mentioned how I have something in the works for a charity event for this summer if I get the financing? Well I found a unique foundation that is giving $1000.00 to anyone who has an adventure/ plan that is worth getting $1000.00 for and they can use the money to do it.
So I submitted my application with a video with my pitch ( my story of what I would use the money for)
If picked, they will contact me and some other applicants who made the short list and will be invited to a party to give a last ditch pitch of our event or what ever I or the other candidates want the money for in front of a panel of the foundation members. After which, whoever is selected will then be contacted a few days later and presented with the cheque! How awesome is that!
I really hope I get picked to have my chance at winning the $1000.00 because it just so happens that for me to register for my event, it costs exactly $1000.00 and if I get the money I will be well on my way to setting off and completing my Athletic/charity event and maybe a little piece of history!?!

January was a right off, but things are getting better

It's been a while I know, I was sick most of January with the flu and was caught up again with anxiety attacks and insomnia while I was sick with the flu. I saw my doctor and he put me on meds again and after a few more weeks of coughing and sniffling I finally starting to feel better.

I got back to training, (mostly swimming) a couple of weeks ago, and am slowly building up my strength.

Good news!! Joanne finally found a job! but it will be a while before we get our feet back on the ground catching up with bills, so as it stands now I haven't entered any competitions, but I do have something in the works that will be big!! if things work out? but I can't say anything about it yet? except it will be a charity event.

This past weekend was the annual Barrie winterfest and of course I did the polar bear dip and also made the A-channel news clip.

Here is the link to my movie clip I made with my camera of my polar bear dip ....enjoy!

Happy New Year

A look back at my races in 2010.....May next year bring health and prosperity to all.

2010-03-28 Around the Bay 30 km Run 4:18:49.1
2010-05-16 Ironman Florida 70.3 7:27:51
2010-06-13 MultiSport Canada Triathlon Series, Binbrook sprint 1:53:31
2010-06-19 Niagara Ultra Half Marathon 2:42:01
2010-06-26 MultiSport Canada Triathlon Series, Welland half Iron distance 7:29:53
2010-07-10 Muncie Endurathon half Iron distance 6:50:15
2010-08-08 Barrie Sprint tri 1:16:17
2010-11-21 Ironman Arizona 15:59:45

As we are feeling the pinch with Joanne out of work still I won't be doing as many races in 2011 unless Joanne finds work in the new year, but I will try to get in at least one half ironman distance race.

As for my long awaited Ironman Arizona race report, I have decided not to write it. I did try, but felt all I was writing about were excuses in my race with "if I" or "I could haves?" but in all truth I gave the best I could for the day and was happy with finishing, I just was not happy with how my body worked for the day...But I can give a short glimpse of how my day went....

Swim...1:18:39...My swim was slow because of over crowding I picked the wrong line to swim and I swam passively sitting back so as not to be an asshole like the others who swam over me rather then pulling back as I did.

My Bike...6:42:39...The cold had a real effect on my peddling as did the high winds reported to being around 37mph rain, hail and sandstorms sometimes all at once!! which didn't result in me having slower then expected bike split as my bike split would have been better had i not stopped to help and stayed with an injured woman rider who was blown off her bike breaking a few bones I suspect? until the ambulance and paramedics came. And to the fact I was having bike seat issues with numbing of my groin so I had to take a few breaks getting off my bike, one of which to adjust my seat and another at special needs stop on my third loop getting off my bike to have a sitdown picnic while watching all the bikers I passed pass me.

My run...7:28:40... After I took my time in T2 to change and warm up and get some feeling in my groin, I ran the first 13miles at a slow pace but I was running! doing 7min run with a 3min walk all the while with my knee pain, getting a half marathon split in ruffly 3hrs, and then knowing I couldn't keep up this pace to meet my 14hr goal with my knee pain, I decided to walk the second half of the marathon, which took me aprox 4.5hrs.

The finish I ran out the last 100-300ft of the chute after pausing to take a stone out of my shoe when I could see the finish and hearing Mike Riley announcing " come on you can make it under 16hr" to which I was actually trying to drag out the time to get a closer finish to be under 16hrs. I then sprinted out the finish chute giving hi fives along to way to finish strong at 15:59:45.

Happy New Year.
